HEMATOLOGICAL
DISORDERS CAUSING HYDROPS |
Hematological disorders resulting in fetal hydrops constitute 10-27% of the cases. Fetal anemia plays a major role in the pathogenesis of these cases. Fetal anemia may be immunologically induced due to a reaction between maternally produced antibodies and fetal red blood cell antigens, or nonimmunologically as in hemoglobinopathies.
Immune hydrops results from the anemia that arises due to the presence of circulating antibodies against the fetal red blood cell antigens. These antibodies are transferred from maternal blood to the fetal red blood cell antigens. These antibodies are transferred from maternal blood to the fetal circulation.
Nonimmune hydrops results from many different conditions that result in
fetal anemia.
